My work focuses on my personal experiences of sleep paralysis and night terrors. Working with digital drawings, calligraphy pen ink drawings and woodblock carving, my work depicts a series of vivid scenes drawn from dreams that I recollect having. It focuses on a shifting reality similar to a hallucinogenic vision, also referred to as “lucid vision”.
To give my work an illustrative narrative, I draw on an aesthetic of mythological and folklore art. I use symbolism and vivid imagery to capture some of my dramatic and horrifying experiences. Using woodblock carving represents both how delicate those memories are, and how they are still memorable after you wake up. Acknowledging that in the REM state, many faces cannot be recognised, my drawings symbolise figures whose faces are not recognisable, but are somehow familiar.
