SIAR

Liv Ní Mhurchú

‘SIAR (West)’ is a menswear collection based on a body of research surrounding the west coast of Ireland. Growing up in this landscape, I drew from places I’ve connected with over the years – from the Flaggy Shore in County Clare, to stone clad Inis Meáin, and Achill Island with its resident roadside sheep. Spending hours in the ocean followed by hours in the local. Meeting surfers. Meeting fishermen.
Using “surf and turf” in a fabric context, I created pieces that reflect both land and sea; a blend of recycled, functional waterproof fabrics with traditional Irish wool and up-cycled sheepskins from Sligo. The collection includes outerwear silhouettes derived from deconstructed wetsuits, graphic prints with aerial imagery of Liscannor Bay, and a series of “après surf” hats.
Understanding the relationship between “man” and “sea” inspired thoughts and ideas in me about the value of functional clothing and materials.
