Personal Effects: A Family Story

I’m a graduate of NCAD with a BA in Fine Art Painting. I have an MA in Visual Arts Practices. DVI helped me develop my project 'Personal Effects: A Family Story'. This project is inspired by photographs and artefacts relating to my family background, recently uncovered in my father’s old family home in south inner-city Dublin.
My project examines the role source materials play in helping us to understand the past. Using these sources along with stories/memories, I reimagine the day-to-day lives of my father’s family. On a broader scale, through research, I hope to show the impact of home, church, work, leisure and war on the lives of working-class people in the early part of the twentieth century.
Acknowledging the ‘unknowableness’ of ‘back then’ is my starting point for this project. We can never really know the past; memory is suspect, and my interpretation of source materials is subjective.
