Postpartum

Fiorella Barchetta

She/her

The intention of this work is to explore the subject of motherhood and reproduction, placing particular importance on the body and its vulnerability in an abstract way. Being a mother is universal, yet motherhood is a completely unique and personal experience. This subject has been explored by many artists in the past.
The main aim of this research is to explore this theme from an outside perspective, of someone who is not a mother. The outcomes of this research are presented from this perspective. Whilst the idea of becoming a mother is a very distant thought, it is almost something that is expected of a woman. Historically the role of women as artists has been debated and challenged, with artmaking being seen as a substitute for motherhood. While I don't necessarily agree with this, I do see the art making process as being allied to procreation.
