Remembering The Everyday

Donal O'Kane

My work focuses on the everyday and family life and, in particular, how we remember and record these parts of our lives. I wanted to observe the smaller moments in our lives such as the pattern on a carpet, the fancy dessert spoon, and the scribbled birthday card. Through repetition and more laborious processes, I wanted to commemorate these small moments to emphasise the importance and meaning they have in our lives.

I work both traditionally and digitally and allow the two to work together, but I have a strong preference for the traditional forms such as handwritten text, freehand drawing, free-motion stitch, and patchwork. For me, the process has as much importance and says as much about the work as the finished piece does.
