An Archive of Sitting

Amy Devlin

She/her

Amy Devlin is an artist and printmaker from Belfast. Her practice uses the domestic space as a place of inquiry. Her interest lies specifically with the objects within the space and their relationship to its inhabitants. She is interested in how, through repetition of use and amount of time spent in proximity to the objects, that they can almost tell a story of a person’s life or hold some of their personality.

Investigations into the tactility of the fabric and conducting visits with upholsterers, Amy focuses on making observations directly from the surface of the objects and an exploration of their marks, creases and folds. The exterior reveals the physical presence of the relationship with its user. She mirrors the fundamental tactile nature of this subject matter with the tactile nature of her printmaking and sculptural work. She questions the marks made and the changes to the surface, as not only signs of ageing but also as potential signs of the sitter’s dependency on the object.
