In Search of the Dryad

William Caffrey

My practice has developed through drawing, painting, fine art printing, mixed media, ceramics and sculpture.

The process begins with looking, sensing or remembering something in a location or space, or is sparked by an object. Through making drawings and taking photographs, the back story is researched. I tend to continuously explore an image or form by deconstructing and manipulating the work through the use of materials in an effort to refine it. Focus on the dialogue between the form and the image and the final composition is generally a result of both implied and deliberate decisions that occur as the work develops.

The inspiration for this particular work, 'Searching for the Dryad' derived from a long-term unexplainable child-like fascination with forests and the atmosphere within them. Forests seem timeless, with an apparent perpetual regeneration with continuous cycles of renewal and birth, linking the past, present and future. They are a reminder of our own temporality.
