Gloom and Bloom; Combating Negativity in a Pandemic

Sarah Beegan

My studio practise has focused on exploring growth and the pandemic. My work is aimed at provoking an emotive response from the viewer as they look at my paintings which are a mixture of personal experience based on fear and hope. The symbolism of hope is represented in my work through the use of floral imagery combined with a double exposure effect of hospital images, it seeks to create a strange narrative of growth and sterility. At times the work is psychedelic but grounded in an element of personal history. I work in both oil and acrylic on large canvases but also enjoy experimenting with other surfaces eg. prosthetic limbs, paper and wood.
