Dystopia

Patrick Butterly

He/him

Taking cues from 1980s futurism and the concept of hauntology, this project focuses on the duality between the past and the future. Throughout the work, there is the idea of a flipped liminal world, reflecting the duality of our heritage and our future. There is also the duality of the work being done in a very traditional sudo-impressionistic style but being achieved by digital means similar to digital painting and the use of virtual reality.
The project takes inspiration from heritage and the fact that it is hard to find Irish architectural styles due to colonisation in the past. It presents the hypotheses that colonisation is much like the internet and that it acts as a void of culture. The work plays with the idea of “dystopia” and raises the question whether a dystopian world is lurking around the corner instead of being something far off in the distance.
