The Role of Pubs in Irish Society

Nadine Reilly

She/her

In March 2020, Irish pubs were told to shut their doors, they did not know when they could re-open again. Pubs selling food were able to re-open during the summer months and again over Christmas, but “wet” pubs were shut for over a year.

This is a first for Irish people as the pubs have never been closed this long and I wanted to research the impact the pub has on Irish society.

My projects include ‘Loss’, ‘Love’ and ‘if the pub can be brought home’. Outcome 1 is a series of a memorial cards for the pubs that have had to shut their doors forever. Outcome 2 is a series of written love letters to the pub, and outcome 3 is a designed board game to replicate a pub crawl.
