New Life

Luke Gaffney

He/him

Throughout this year I have worked in a very experimental style testing various different colour combinations and investigating the myriad of ways in which paint catches against a wide array of surfaces. My work is influenced by my many interests such as graffiti culture, skateboarding and ecology.
Firstly, in terms of my process, my work incorporates the movement and fluidity common to skateboarding and graffiti and compliments that with vibrant colours to respond to my environment. On a tactile level, I have been reusing and recycling materials over the year and it has grown to become a huge part of my practice. I began to notice the huge amount of waste I was producing from skateboarding, be it with my shoes and clothes ripping, or my board snapping. I wanted to be able to create new life for these materials so I began to incorporate them into my work. In this way my work is an attempt to merge my influences with a method, creating something from fragments in a sustainable engaging manner.
