All roads lead to the bog

She/her

The tradition of turf cutting is closely tied to our cultural and historical past as a nation. The presence of thousands of acres of bogland in Ireland makes it one of the most important ecosystems on our small island. My study focuses on exploring the historical, cultural and environmental importance of the boglands. As industrial turf production comes to an end in Ireland, it’s important to remember the role of this tradition in many individuals’ lives. My first project ‘boggeddown’ preserves a range of Ireland’s historical traditions; my second project, ‘All roads lead to’ highlights the cultural role of the bog and how it ties people together; and finally, ‘Peaty’ is an animation that helps us to understand the bog’s environmental importance. Ireland’s natural heritage is unique to us and spans every corner of this island, it reminds us of the importance of our landscape, and weaves us together.
