Transformation & Preservation of the Self

Kenya Dempsey

She/her

Developed as a result of my own experience with body image during Lockdown, my project focuses on all aspects of transformation of the self as a result of stifling beauty standards and the recent obsession with plastic surgery.
During the pandemic, 11% of women surveyed indicated they are more interested in cosmetic surgery or non-surgical procedures now than before COVID-19. Plagued by social media influencers and celebrities who have the money for and access to constant enhancing of their face and bodies, it is no surprise that women feel pressured to change themselves during this time of isolation.
I explored the positives and negatives of having access to these life changing procedures as well as what the future holds. My outcomes were produced in a mix of ceramics, video, illustration and animation and through these I am hoping to encourage people to question what is being advertised to them.
