Visual Perception: A Big Fat Best Guess

Karen Ebbs

Why does cutting edge science tell us that our perceptions of reality are, in fact, best guesses? And…can there ever be a space devoid of narrative? - huge questions I ponder in the twilight hours, and all the while it seems that the rest of the world is out partying.
My immersive environments comprise large-scale abstract paintings and sculptural forms.  These paintings emerge from the painted walls, a field brimming with potentiality.  Recurring visual elements appear in all works, winding, gestural, ambiguous, unpredictable shapes and motifs. Viewers interact with the bizarre sculptures imbuing this evolving, mutable space with new narratives primed and formed by their own life experience. Colour, as a vibratory language, is an essential element of my work.

Driven by curiosity, my practice draws from many contemporary wells; art, cognitive science, neuroscience and philosophy of the mind.
