Teaching and Art Practice

Holly Kirby

She/her

My philosophy as an art educator is to incorporate as many physical and visual life skills, and practical elements into my classes. I try to link cognitive and creative skills with motor skills, thereby giving my students opportunities to problem solve and critically engage in art. Through anatomical and physical pursuits, the brain is linked through the hands.

My own artistic practice is often an exploration of the body, the fragility of life and decay. I am interested in the relationship I have with my own anatomy, and how it changes due to my chronic illness, inflammatory arthritis. My fears and insecurities of my illness have led me to question my own art practice. The use of my hands in particular, have played a significant role in my practice as materiality, physicality and labour are important in producing my artworks.
