Inner Growth

The inspiration for my work comes from the structures of plant forms and contrasting architectural sources. I draw my main influence from the National Botanical Gardens and the Natural History Museum. I am fascinated by the idea of organic structures and work in vibrant colour combinations allowing compositions to evolve through semi-abstract painting.

My process is informed initially by research into such sources as Islamic art, the vibrancy of colour in the stained glass work of Harry Clarke, and the contemporary work of Ross Bleckner.

I sketch and photograph on location and these studies allow me to look at my subject in new and exciting ways. I explore first through charcoal drawings and then take these further into colour studies to develop compositions which form the references for my work.
