‘Undesired Mediums' is a research project exploring disruptive and restorative design. Working within sustainable frameworks it builds on the principles of zero-waste, planetary boundaries and doughnut economics. The intention of the collection is to highlight that the word 'waste' does not exist freely in nature, only in man-made systems.
The project examines constructing and repurposing unwanted clothing, fabric and bicycle inner tubes into sculptural and screen printed fabrics. It also showcases the importance of open source design in sustainability by utilising zero-waste fashion patterns in digital textile designs, therefore eliminating excess fabric at the onset. By digitally printing with water based pigment, toxic run-off is reduced; and by interacting with materials in a holistic manner, 'Undesired Mediums' highlights that energy is the ultimate currency, not money.
Design awareness, education and research are fundamental to the core aim of eliminating waste and pollution, and to help regenerate materials and natural systems.
